Books Over TV

I love to acquire, hoard, stack, shelve, smell, read and share books. I review books. I stare at books. You get it, right?

Reading progress update: I've read 56%.

To Wager Her Heart (A Belle Meade Plantation Novel) - Tamera Alexander

Loving it! There are multiple storylines with each character that keeps it interesting. There's the town itself and its people, the railroad, a horrible accident and freed blacks trying to educate at Fisk University.

Reading progress update: I've read 67%.

Breakfast in Bed (The Innkeepers) - Rochelle Alers

I want Gage! Can I find a human with his character traits? Tonya and Gage's relationship is realistic, mature and slow (for romance novel). So nice to revisit the ladies friendship and to read about all the yummy Louisiana Cuisine. I'm a foodie and need to visit The Big Easy in the near future.

Not To Be Missed on 03/06/2018

Children of Blood and Bone: The OrÏsha Legacy (Children of OrÏsha) - Tomi Adeyemi
Let's just start with this strikingly beautiful cover. It is art! I must have it on my shelves and perhaps on my wall. I received a preview excerpt of the book from Netgalley and the publisher.

I've finished. Of course the sampler left on a hanger. This will be a best seller for sure. There's so much here and it's a page turner. I don't read many books like this anymore so, my opinion is of a novice. However, I know good writing and plot. Based upon what I've read thus far, I'd recommend and will definitely buy a copy for myself.

Kindred: A Graphic Novel Adaptation - Damian Duffy, John Jennings, Octavia E. Butler

I love Kindred by Octavia Butler. I chose it for World Book Day, when the U. S.  was participating, and everyone that I followed up with enjoyed it. So, when I heard that there was going to be a graphic novel of the book I was very hesitant to give it a try. I saw pics of the drawing on Instagram and wasn't impressed. Just like movie adaptations, I didn't want the graphic novel to taint my love and disappoint.

To my surprise, I'm really enjoying it! I have a few issues, but so far so good. I thought reading it would be a nuisance on a Kindle, but it working out great on my Fire 8.

Books I Read in July 2017

Sin of a Woman (A Curtis Black Novel) - Kimberla Lawson Roby A Name Unknown (Shadows Over England) - Roseanna M. White Kiss the Ring: An Urban Tale - Meesha Mink Boss - Tracy Brown The Cartel 7: Illuminati: Roundtable of Bosses - Ashley and JaQuavis, JaQuavis Coleman Seducing Abby Rhodes - J.D. Mason Where the Light Falls: A Novel of the French Revolution - Owen Pataki, Allison Pataki

I'm super excited that I was able to read 7 books this month. I've been struggling for a long while. My health and not having a good system in place has affected me greatly, but now I think I have a good one. I talked about it in a previous post. I will listen up to 5% of each book for the month and those that immediately grab my attention will go to the top of the list. And since I will already be interested, I will be able to move to the next book without hesitation.

Friday Reads

The Diplomat's Daughter: A Novel - Karin Tanabe The Address: A Novel - Fiona Davis

About an hour ago I finished Where The Light Falls by Allison and Owen Pataki. It was an emotional 4 star read. Not what I'm accustomed to, but well with it! I will start The Diplomat's Daughter by Karin Tanabe tonight. I absolutely loved The Gilded Years. I'm excited to get to The Address by Fiona Davis and hope it lives up to all the hype. A weekend filled with historical fiction is a great one indeed.

What are you reading this weekend?

Exciting August Releases!

The Address: A Novel - Fiona Davis Stay with Me: A novel - Adebayo Ayobami Surrender to Me (The Lawsons of Louisiana) - Donna Hill The Paris Spy - Susan Elia MacNeal All Is Beauty Now - Sarah Faber To Wager Her Heart (A Belle Meade Plantation Novel) - Tamera Alexander Seeking Sarah: A Novel - ReShonda Tate Billingsley Pretty, Nasty, Lovely - Rosalind Noonan Breakfast in Bed (The Innkeepers) - Rochelle Alers The Other Girl - Erica Spindler

There are many more August releases than the ones I've chosen to read. In choosing books that interest me, I'm trying to discern if the writing and plot are enough. I've listened to about 2-5% in each of these books and know, thus far, we will do well.

I realize that it's best for me to get in with more than one book so, that I'm already interested to move on to the next. Reading one book at a time and then picking up another that doesn't hold my attention leaves me blank for days. I lose steam and dawdle. Already I have finished 6 books in July, with this method, and am so pleased. I could've read more if I would've adopted this way much sooner.

Here's the release dates for these books and others that aren't shown that I may read;

Gravel Heart by Abdulrazak Gurnah

The Address by Fiona Davis

Reading progress update: I've read 62%.

The Cartel 7: Illuminati: Roundtable of Bosses - Ashley and JaQuavis, JaQuavis Coleman

This book is telling all kinds of truths. I think I started this series at book 5. I didn't feel lost because my cousin had read the first 3 ( I think) and told me about them. I want to go back and read 1-4 to familiarize myself with the characters and how The Cartel and its members got started. I want to and will own the entire series for my home library. The books are definitely re-readable.

Exciting July Releases That Are On My TBR

A Paris All Your Own: Bestselling Women Writers on the City of Light - Eleanor Brown A Name Unknown (Shadows Over England) - Roseanna M. White The Diplomat's Daughter: A Novel - Karin Tanabe Where the Light Falls: A Novel of the French Revolution - Owen Pataki, Allison Pataki Seducing Abby Rhodes - J.D. Mason Edward VII: The Prince of Wales and the Women He Loved - Catharine Arnold The One I've Waited For (The Crystal Series) - Mary B. Morrison The Cartel 7: Illuminati: Roundtable of Bosses - Ashley and JaQuavis, JaQuavis Coleman The Truth We Bury: A Novel - Barbara Taylor Sissel

I finished only one book in June. I was quite shocked. I've started many and am hopeful that July will be a better month for reading. I've been out of sorts personally and physically. However, this list of books are right up my street and I'm sure are going to be awesome reads. I'm revisiting favorite authors and genres.

New June Releases That Are On My TBR

Forbidden Fruit - Stanley Gazemba High as the Heavens - Kate Breslin With You Always (Orphan Train) - Jody Hedlund The Little French Bistro - Nina George The Underground River: A Novel - Martha Conway The Supremes Sing the Happy Heartache Blues: A Novel - Edward Kelsey Moore The Unquiet Grave - Sharyn McCrumb A Fierce Love: One Woman’s Courageous Journey to Save Her Marriage - Shauna Shanks The Secret History of Jane Eyre: How Charlotte Brontë Wrote Her Masterpiece - John Pfordresher Beneath a Burning Sky - Jonathon Burgess

First, I must say that this month is the month of beautiful covers. There's only a couple in this line up that don't scream, "Buy me!" Super thrilled for all the historical fiction from Bethany House Publishing. Y'all know how much I love my historical fiction. I'm revisiting some authors and enthusiastically picking up some reads by authors that are new to me. The two books that I'm eager to get into are Forbidden Fruit by Stanley Gazemba and A Fierce Love by Shauna Shanks. Both have awesome covers.

I'm a sucker for covers. I've been known to rebuy books with better covers. Most often I actually prefer UK covers to US. If you didn't know I prefer paperbacks to hardcovers. The aesthetic of hardcovers on the shelves are better, but hardcovers are heavy and cumbersome. Paperbacks feel better in my hands and are easier to transport. Okay, I've gone on tangent.

Are any of these awesome titles on your tbr?

Happy Reading Friends!

Reading progress update: I've read 30%.

Boss - Tracy Brown

I'm not meshing well with BOSS thus far to my utter disappointment. However, I read some reviews and this book is supposed to become riveting so, I will trudge forth and perhaps skim until I reach that point. I actually put it down and moved on to The Most Beautiful Woman in Florence: A Story about Botticelli by Alyssa Palombo.

I hope I can get another book read in the next 3 days. April has definitely been a hell of a month for me.

Reading progress update: I've read 2%.

Boss - Tracy Brown

Finished another book by Jen Turano. I've enjoyed all the books I've read by her. Today I hope to immerse myself into the world of Boss. Tracy's books are usually emotional rollercoasters and I've been told Boss won't disappoint.

New April Releases That Are On My TBR

Behind the Scenes (Apart from the Crowd) - Jen Turano Boss - Tracy Brown I See You - Clare Mackintosh Gone Without a Trace - Mary Torjussen Manderley Forever: A Biography of Daphne du Maurier - Tatiana de Rosnay, Sam Taylor Under a Sardinian Sky - Sara Alexander The Most Beautiful Woman in Florence: A Story of Botticelli - Alyssa Palombo Seized by Seduction - Brenda Jackson Her Secret Life - Tiffany L. Warren Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI - David Grann

There are so many new releases in April. It's a big release month. I'm super excited for all of these. I have quite a few mystery books on the tbr and I don't read many mysteries. I'm trying to get out of my comfort zone. I even have a nonfiction. Usually these slow me down, but the early reviews of Killers of the Flower Moon lead me to think otherwise.

Can't wait to get to three reads by trusted 4-5 star rated Authors; Behind the Scenes by Jen Turano, Boss by Tracy Brown and Seized By Seduction by Beverly Jenkins. Tatiana De Rosnay has written a biography about Daphne Du Maurier. I know so many who absolutely adore Rebecca. I haven't read it, but am eager. However, once I learned that it may be plagiarized and that some feel none of her other books ever lived up to Rebecca I felt some kind of way about it.

What are your most anticipated April Releases? Do tell. Happy Reading!

Reading progress update: I've read 170 out of 496 pages.

Sweet Temptation (Sweet Evil) - Wendy Higgins

Kaidan.... I read these books for Kaidan. Wendy Higgins is a good writer. I really have enjoyed this series.
